SANFORD I. WEILL INSTITUTE FOR LIFELONG LEARNING
The Sanford I. Weill Institute for Lifelong Learning promotes the transition from school to work by
giving students, staff and parents exposure to a variety of careers and training in specific skills
required to enter the job market. It connects the school with resources in the New York City
community. Its purpose is to:
- Provide for participation by a broad spectrum of individuals including government, labor,
higher education, non–profit and corporate representatives
- all students from the High School of Economics and Finance and their parents
- students and teachers from Academy of Finance programs in New York City and elsewhere
- employees from New York City participating firms
- Enrich the high school setting by replicating a corporate organization and providing a variety
of work experiences.
- Organize and administer work experience for students. The Weill Institute staff identifies
jobs and places students. Students must complete a series of "learning to work" documents:
application, resume, learning goals, logs and business letters.
- Provide professional development for teachers in methods of teaching, economics and
finance, and technology. Access to a network of teachers and professionals in finance
supports the faculty as they design and implement their lessons and consider effective
practices.
- Provide adult learning for parents, staff and community members in economics and finance,
technology and job preparation skills.
- Offer seminars and workshops, ranging from one–time guest appearances, shorts series, one–
term or year–long courses taught by industry leaders.
- Organize research projects in finance, economics and other areas.
- Offer and supervise internships, apprenticeships, mentorships and job–shadowing
experiences
.
How the Weill Institute Works
Weill Institute activities take place on Wednesday afternoons as part of the normal school day.
Seminars run in eight–week Modules and vary over time. Not only do they focus on finance, but they
also enable students to expand their cultural horizons and improve their academic skills. Students
select those they wish to attend. All students must submit a signed parental consent that allows them
to take part in all Weill Institute activities at the school and at external locations in New York City.
Students are expected to "Dress for Business" every Wednesday.
